J’adresse cette lettre pour vous parce que vous et vos films ont été une telle source d'inspiration par tant de personnes qui regardent ou même travaillent dans le cinéma. Je demande votre aide pour résoudre un problème que peu de votre auditoire n'ont probablement jamais songé - le traitement injuste et les mauvaises conditions de travail des artistes en effets visuels du monde entier.

Les effets visuels ont été plus que présent dans une grande part du cinéma en 2009. Des films comme Avatar, District 9 et Star Trek ont tous réussi car ils ont apportés des effets visuels avec un bon scripte, un bon scénario, bien jouée et bien dirigée. Il y a d'autres films pour lesquels les effets visuels semblent être la princpale motivation du publique. La réalité est que les gens ne vont pas voir des films à succès commerciaux comme GI Joe ou Transformers pour l’histoire, la musique ou le jeu des acteurs. Ils ont vu ses films surtout pour les effets visuels spectaculaires, autrement dit, pour les sensations fortes et le divertissement.

Pour l'ensemble de ces films qui s'appuient fortement sur les effets visuels, les studios et les propriétaires de cinéma font des centaines de millions de dollars. Les auteurs, compositeurs et acteurs, tous recevront des paiements résiduels bien mérités et ce, pendant les décennies à venir. Mais les artistes d'effets visuels ne reçoivent pas de redevances. Et comme un artiste en effets visuels m’a déjà dit: "même dans le générique, nous sommes souvent listés presque à la toute fin ».

Comme la plupart des gens qui travaillent dans le cinéma, la télévision et les jeux vidéo, les spécialistes en effets visuels adorent leur travail. Ils apprécient à la fois le travail lui-même et la chance de pouvoir travailler sur une base quotidienne avec autant de gens intelligents, créatifs et talentueux. Meme si les boites d’effets visuels peuvent être les meilleurs endroits et les plus amusants à travailler, ce sont aussi de véritables usines de misère et d’explotation humaine. Les artistes visuels effets fonctionnent généralement sans contrat, pas de vacances payées, pas d'avantages sociaux et les heures supplémentaires souvent non-payés. De plus, étanht donné la nature de leur travail, plusieurs problèmes de santé en découlent du a un acces de temps passé devant un ordinateur tels que, tendinites, syndrome du canal carpien et obésité.

La seule chose nécessaire est la reconnaissance du problème et la valeur de ces artistes. Quand je dis "valeur", je n'utilise pas ce terme au sens abstrait, je veux dire littéralement, en dollars et en valeur d’argent en rapport aux effets visuels du cinéma, la télévision et les industries du jeu vidéo. Il suffit de jeter un coup d'oeil à la liste des plus grands films de tous les temps – dans les 30 premiers films, plusieurs sont des films à effets visuels ou des films d'animation 3D. Les effets visuels entraînent plusieurs milliards de dollars aux grands studios.

Contrairement à tous les autres métiers de cette industrie, il n'y a pas de syndicat pour les artistes en effets visuels. Cela semble être une question de temps, plus qu’autre chose. Les techniques modernes d'effets visuels n’ont que quelques décennies d’existence, et l’art numérique ne dispose que d'environ 20 ans d'histoire en tant qu’outil majeur à la réalisation de films populaires. A l’opposé, les disciplines du cinéma tels que l’interprétation, la réalisation et la composition musicale remontent aux débuts mêmes de l'industrie cinématographique.

Ce nouveau métier, laisse les artistes visuels d'effets numériques avec absolument aucun pouvoir de négociation collective que ce soit. En cette ère de syndicats affaiblis, beaucoup de ces artistes sont naturellement méfiants à l'idée de la syndicalisation. En outre, les artistes en effets visuels travaillent actuellement sous la menace constante des producteurs de voir leurs travaux expulsé vers l'Inde ou la Chine. (Il y a ici un peu d’ironie à exporterdu travail créatif dans un pays comme la Chine qui censure régulièrement les communications - y compris l'annonce des candidatures ® aux Oscars cette année – mais cela ne semble pas déranger les producteurs en recherche de main d’oeuvre.)

Peut-être une sorte d’Union 2.0 et de structure est nécessaire, une plus grande souplesse, d'une institution moderne qui prend les réalités de l'environnement de production d'aujourd'hui en compte, tout en donnant à ces artistes les mêmes protections et prestations de base que les autres métiers reçoivent actuellement. Mais quelle que soit la solution, il est important que les gens prennent conscience du problème.

M. Cameron, vous êtes dans une position unique cette saison aux Academy Awards ®. Votre film Avatar est en nomination pour neuf Oscars ®. Les chances sont élevées qu'à un moment donné, vous serez sur scène en acceptant un prix bien mérité. Tout comme vous avez pris le temps récemment pour parler au nom de la NASA, je vous demande d'envisager de prendre un moment pour parler au nom des artistes des effets visuels et de la façon injuste qu’ils sont traités.

Même une petite déclaration de votre part, causera dans l'industrie une attention immédiate de la presse afin de ce concentrer sur cette question. La Visual Effects Society vous décerneront une récompense bien méritée de votre œuvre plus tard ce mois-ci. Il n'y a aucun doute que vos films innovateurs tels que Titanic, Terminator 2, et maintenant Avatar ont su bien fusionner les effets visuels le scripte et le scénario dans des films qui ont réussi à la fois artistiquement et commercialement.

Pour le bien de tous les artistes qui ont travaillé pour vous et ont été inspiré par votre travail, s'il vous plaît permettez-vous, peu importe le nombre de victoires que vous gagnerez à la soirée des Oscars ® d’entamer de manière significative un débat à Hollywood sur la justice et l'équité des milliers d'artistes qui créent des effets visuels.

To James Cameron,

I'm addressing this letter to you because you and your films have been such an inspiration to so many who either watch or work in the movies. I'm asking for your help in addressing a problem that few in your audience have probably ever given a thought to -- the unfair treatment and working conditions of visual effects artists around the world.

Visual effects films were dominant commercial forces in 2009. Films like Avatar, District 9 and Star Trek all succeeded because they brought together visual effects with great writing, acting, directing and other cinematic elements. There are other films for which the visual effects seem to be the primary audience motivator. Without any slight, the reality is that people did not go to see recent commercially successful films like G.I. Joe or the Transformers movies for the script, music or the acting. They went in droves to see the spectacular visual effects - the "thrill ride".

For all of these films that rely heavily on visual effects, the studios and theater owners made hundreds of millions of dollars. The writers, composers and actors all will receive well-deserved residual payments for decades to come. But the visual effects artists don't receive royalties and residuals. And as one visual effects artist told me, "even in the credits, we're listed after craft services."

Like most people who work in the film, television and video game industries, visual effects artists love their jobs. They enjoy both the work itself and the ability to work on a daily basis with so many smart, creative and talented people. However, visual effects houses can be the best, most fun and high-tech sweatshops on earth. Visual effects artists typically work with no contract, no paid vacation, no benefits, and often no paid overtime. And because of the nature of the work health problems such as obesity, tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome are common.

The thing needed is recognition of the problem and the value of these artists. When I say "value", I'm not using that term abstractly -I mean the bottom line, practical dollars and cents value of visual effects to the film, television and video game industries. Just take a look at a list of the world's top grossing films of all time - of the top 30 films, every single one of them is a visual effects driven or animated film. Visual effects have meant multi-billion dollar business for the studios.

Unlike every other craft in the film industry, there is no union for visual effects artists. This seems to be a matter of timing as much as anything. Modern visual effects techniques are only a few decades old, and the digital side of the visual effects arts really only has about 20 years of history as a popular filmmaking tool. The other filmmaking disciplines such as acting, directing and music composition date back to the very beginnings of the film industry.

This newness has left digital visual effects artists with absolutely no collective bargaining power whatsoever. In this age of weakened unions, many of these artists are understandably leery of the idea of unionization. Additionally, visual effects artist currently work under constant threat from producers of having their work sent off to India or China. (The irony of sending creative work to a country like China that routinely censors communications -- including the announcement of this year's Oscar® nominations -- doesn't seem to bother these bottom-line seeking producers.)

Perhaps some sort of "Union 2.0" structure is needed; a more flexible, modern institution that takes the realities of today's production environment into account , while still giving these artists some of the same basic protections and benefits that other crafts currently receive. But whatever the solution, it's important people become aware of the problem.

Mr. Cameron, you are in a unique position this Academy Awards® season. Your film Avatar has been nominated for nine Oscars®. Odds are high that at some point, you'll be up on stage accepting a well desrved award. Just as you took time recently to speak out on behalf of NASA, I'm asking you to consider taking a moment to speak out on behalf of visual effects artists and how they are being treated unfairly.

Even a small statement by you will cause industry and press attention to focus on this issue. The Visual Effects Society is awarding you a well-deserved lifetime achievement award later this month. There's no question that your groundbreaking films such as Titanic, Terminator 2, and now Avatar have all fused visual effects and storytelling into movies that have succeeded both commercially and artistically.

For the sake of all the artists who have both worked for you and been inspired by your work, please allow whatever victories you have on Oscar® night to be beginning of meaningful discussion in Hollywood about fairness for the thousands of artists who create visual effects.

Q. Glad to have you here for the interview, Frederic! To begin with, tell us something about yourself?
Hi to every CGTantra readers! I'm living in the province of Quebec in Canada. I was born in a small French town in the mid seventies just in the middle of the province. I did my first drawing at 3 years old and since, I never stop. I always dreamt about doing special effects for cinema. I did many latex puppets, creatures and make-up effects for theater plays when I was a teenager until I discover the first 3D visual effects from movies such as Terminator 2 and The Abyss. I decided to do a traditional cartoon and 3D animation program in a private school in 1996 and 1997. I did different type of jobs for the first 5 years after school, from storyboard artist, character animator, texture artist to finally end-up in matte painting field.

Rise of Niburu - The myth of planet X

Rise of Niburu is a personal matte painting inspired by the myth of the planet X, also called Niburu. This hypothetical astronomical object become more popular since the arrival of 2012. I though it could be funny to do an image about this story. I made it in 6 hours, inside the same day.

Sitchin's theory proposes the planets Tiamat and Nibiru. Tiamat supposedly existed between Mars and Jupiter. He postulated that it was a thriving world in a much differently shaped solar system, with jungles and oceans, whose orbit was disrupted by the arrival of a large planet or very small star (less than twenty times the size of Jupiter) which passed through the solar system between 65 million and four billion years ago. The new orbits caused Tiamat to collide with one of the moons of this object, which is known as Nibiru. The debris from this collision are thought by the theory's proponents to have variously formed the asteroid belt, the moon, and the current incarnation of the planet Earth.

Beginning in 1995, websites such as ZetaTalk have identified Nibiru or "Planet X" as a large brown dwarf currently within our planetary system, soon to pass relatively close to Earth. Sitchin disagrees with the timing of passage.

To the Babylonians, Nibiru was the celestial body or region sometimes associated with the god Marduk. The word is Akkadian and the meaning is uncertain. Because of this, the hypothetical planet Nibiru is sometimes also referred to as Marduk. Sitchin hypothesizes it as a planet in a highly elliptic orbit around the Sun, with a perihelion passage some 3,600 years ago and assumed orbital period of about 3,750 years; he also claims it was the home of a technologically advanced human-like alien race, the Anunnaki, who apparently visited Earth in search of gold.

Here is the article: PROFESSION: MATTE-PAINTER (by Nathalie Guimond) Le cinéma vous intéresse? Vous êtes gravement impressionné depuis toujours par les effets spéciaux et la virtuosité avec laquelle y sont représentés les batailles de science-fiction, les paysages fantastiques et les reconstitutions historiques? Vous aimez à la fois les côtés technique et artistique de la création?

La profession de matte painter est peut-être pour vous. Les experts de la langue française s'arrachent les cheveux devant cet anglicisme, mais aucun équivalent satisfaisant n'a encore été trouvé. Faute d'un meilleur terme, on les appelle les matte painters et ils font du... matte painting. Depuis une dizaine d'années, le cinéma s'est littéralement transformé avec les possibilités des technologies numériques, et les productions cinématographiques réduisent au minimum la construction de décors physiques. C'est précisément là que la technique du matte painting par ordinateur intervient, afin de réaliser des arrière-plans d'envergure qui seraient autrement impossibles à faire. Que ce soit par extension d'un décor physique ou par une création complète, le matte painting permet de créer des backgrounds tels que des décors futuristes, des reconstitutions historiques ou des paysages fantastiques.

Les matte painters sont avant tout des artistes multidisciplinaires qui travaillent toujours très près du réalisateur en donnant corps à des images qui correspondent à la vision de ce dernier. Ils travaillent sur des machines qui nous font blêmir d'envie et utilisent principalement des logiciels comme Photoshop CS3 et XSI de Softimage. Raphaël Lacoste et Frédéric St-Arnaud travaillent chez Rodeo FX, une petite boîte montréalaise spécialisée en création d'effets spéciaux. Ils ont accepté de nous rencontrer.

Voir: Le parcours des matte painters semble souvent aussi hétéroclite qu'extrêmement spécialisé. Quel est le vôtre?

Frédéric: "J'ai étudié en communication graphique à l'Université Laval, et par la suite, j'ai fait une formation en animation traditionnelle à l'ICARI, une école privée, avec mes cours à option spécialisés en 3D. Mes cinq premières années de carrière étaient orientées en animation 3D pour les téléséries et les publicités télé. Je travaille maintenant depuis cinq ans en matte painting."

Raphaël: "J'ai fait cinq ans de Beaux-Arts (art contemporain et médias, pas une formation idéale, je n'aime pas trop l'art conceptuel)... J'ai complété ma formation avec une maîtrise en animation 3D au CNBDI d'Angoulême, en France. J'ai travaillé en jeux vidéo (Prince of Persia ou Assassin's Creed) comme directeur artistique pendant sept ans (cinématique et jeu). J'ai aussi travaillé comme photographe parallèlement. Sinon, mon parcours m'a permis de faire beaucoup de conception et de l'illustration. Depuis que je travaille chez Rodeo FX, je fais davantage de création, moins de gestion, et j'apprécie le lien entre l'illustration et la photographie dans mon travail quotidien. J'ai gagné un VES Award en 2006 pour mon travail sur Prince of Persia, ce qui est très encourageant!"

Voir: Dans la spécialisation des effets spéciaux, il y a le matte painting, et à l'intérieur du matte painting, il y a des spécialisations encore plus pointues. Quelle est la vôtre?

Frédéric: "Le réalisme photographique, avec une préférence pour les extensions de décors et le dessin de conception."

Raphaël: "J'aime beaucoup la composition d'images, créer des ambiances, des atmosphères, travailler les lumières..."

Voir: En résumé, quel serait, selon vous, le profil parfait d'un matte painter?

Frédéric et Raphaël: "Ça demande des compétences poussées dans plusieurs domaines artistiques comme la direction photo, la mise en scène, la direction artistique... Il y a beaucoup de notions à assimiler. Il faut maîtriser le côté artistique en plus du côté technique. Un matte painter peut être responsable d'un plan cinématographique au complet, autant au niveau de son look que de son aspect narratif. Il est assez difficile de trouver des matte painters, c'est un métier hyper-spécialisé mais qui demande une large palette d'habiletés."
